Description
Ireland’s oldest stone church, St. Cianán’s, built during the 5th century gave it’s Irish name to this village. The name means ‘stone church’. The church has long since disappeared and the ruins which stand on the site may be those of the 12th century monastery, St. Mary’s Abbey. The last battle of the historic conflict ‘The Battle of the Boyne’, fought between the Catholic forces of King James 2 and William of Orange was said to have been fought near Duleek and King William is said to have spent the night there after the battle.
